Frequently Asked Questions

What is Industrial Rope Access?

Industrial Rope Access is an access method that allows any trade to be carried out in difficult or inaccessible areas in a quick and safe manner by dual-ticketed technicians (ARAA & trade/profession).

Rope Access provides a more efficient solution to many of the access challenges encountered within construction, maintenance and inspection projects and can be utilised across all industry sectors. Using rope access often provides numerous benefits including:

• higher productivity
• lower costs
• decreased shutdown time
• reduced OHS risk

Workplace Health and Safety statistics show that industrial rope access is a safer work method than alternatives such as scaffolding and elevated work platforms.

What is ARAA? How does this relate to IRATA?

ARAA is the Australian Rope Access Association. It has been formed to:

• Enhance levels of expertise and professionalism among members in particular and the rope access industry in general
• Create standards that will provide a safe working environment for rope access professionals
• Give members access to the latest industry information.
• Liaise with governmental and regulatory bodies
• Promote use of rope access as a fast, safe and frequently more cost-effective alternative to traditional access methods

IRATA is a similar regulatory body that was formed in the UK. ARAA is specific and tailored for Australia and is structured to promote rope access according to Australian Standards. We are finding that increasingly, Australian-mainland sites are turning to ARAA-based workers. Sites generally will be one or the other (not a mix) of ARAA or IRATA.
